Long nails harbor
bacteria on fingertips!
It is well known that dirt and bacteria lurk especially under fingernails and on fingertips. In food safety, it is standard practice to "always keep nails short and trimmed." We conducted an experiment to verify this.
Comparison of bacterial count on fingertips between regularly trimmed nails and untrimmed, long nails
It is recommended to wash hands thoroughly in this manner.
(CFU/hand)
